The administration, management and maintenance of Sambalpur city is managed by the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation. The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation was founded in the year 1883 which operated under the ‘Central Provinces Municipal Act, 1886’ and the ‘Bihar Orissa Municipal Act, 1922’. Finally the ‘Odisha Municipal Act, 1950’ became active in the year 1951.

The city of Sambalpur is also one of the Lok Sabha Constituencies among 21 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state of Odisha. The constituency of Sambalpur covers the entire district of Sambalpur along with parts of the Angul and Deogarh districts. The seat of Sambalpur Loksabha Constituency comprises of 1,243,271 electorates of which 6.3 lakhs are male and 5.9 lakhs are females as per the data available with the Election Commission of India. The Sambalpur Lok Sabha Constituency is said to be the second most populated city of Odisha located on the rivfer banks of Mahanadi and also is the district headquarters of Sambalpur District.
